Immigration and Tax

Immigration and Tax

You may well be looking to enter the UK and need assistance with the complicated issues surrounding immigration and tax implications. We work very closely with immigration lawyers to co-ordinate a bespoke immigration and tax strategy for incoming high net worth individuals. We can introduce these trusted advisers who are able to assist in your visa applications.

Immigration into the UK is operated on a Points-Based System comprising of five “Tiers”. The system is designed to attract those with a higher range of skills or who can support themselves.  Tier 1 is aimed at high value and highly skilled individuals who will contribute to the UK’s productivity and growth. At Jeffcote Donnison we have expertise in assisting those applying within this category. Tier 1 is the only part of the regime which does not require applicants to be sponsored either by an employer or an education provider.

For new applications, there are four subcategories:

Individual applicants must have net assets of at least £1 million.

Business investors seeking to establish, take over or be actively involved in the running of a UK business, with at least £200,000 to invest.

Graduate Entrepreneur

For graduates who have been identified by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as having developed world class innovative ideas or entrepreneurial skills, to extend their stay in the UK after graduation to develop their business. This route is now tested and also requires proof of financial investment.

Exceptional talent

This route is for those who are internationally recognised as world leaders or potential world-leading talent in the fields of science and the arts and who wish to work in the UK.
Other applications may be made under the remaining Tiers 2 -5 which deal with other skilled and unskilled workers coming to the UK under sponsored permanent or temporary employment and students.

The requirements for eligibility under each Tier are subject to frequent variation. Keeping abreast of the law is therefore a full time occupation, and there are many pitfalls for the unwary. Our advisors are kept constantly up to date with legal requirements and the impact this may or may not have on your tax requirements. Anyone making an application under the Points-Based System is always strongly advised to obtain professional legal advice. At Jeffcote Donnison, we will work closely with you and your legal professionals to provide you with peace of mind that your legal tax obligations are fulfilled.
